Today a groom has virtually unlimited choices in formal wear for himself and the members of his wedding party. There are hundreds of coat & accessory options, in a vast array of textures, colors and styles.
We have offered suggestions below, based on "tradition" but feel free to choose whatever it is that pleases you. While there are certain events, locations and/or time of day that may dictate what is most appropriate for the occasion, it is mostly acceptable now to wear whatever it is that fits your personality, mood & budget.
Ultra Formal or White Tie
The "White Tie" function traditionally requires a black tailcoat and tuxedo trouser, worn with a white pique vest & bow tie, white glove and black top hat. This is the "penguin" look that comes to mind when thinking of a tuxedo. In modern times, it is appropriate to wear a vest & bow tie of another fabric, however you should still wear white accessories. These functions are always held in the evening and usually in very high-end locations.
Black Tie Evening
A "Black Tie" event calls for a black tuxedo with formal vest or cummerbund and bow tie. Traditionally, a function scheduled for 8pm or later requires a tailcoat and black cummerbund, while a regular black tuxedo is suitable for an earlier event. It is now appropriate to wear a black tuxedo with your choice of any number of colorful vests, cummerbunds and tie styles.
Black Tie Daytime
A "Black Tie" function that begins during daylight hours is generally considered "less formal" and so any combination of tuxedo and accessories is allowable. We often see a white jacket over black trousers for this type of function, as well as the traditional "black" jacket. It is becoming commonplace to see ivory and gray tuxedos as well as black and/or white with contrasting color details as well. Again, these jackets are often paired with colored accessories for "fun" and "exciting" combinations that reflect your own personality and taste.
Formal Daytime
A black or charcoal gray business suit, worn with a white dress shirt and conservative tie is usually appropriate for daytime formal events. The Cutaway tailcoat (also known as a Morning Coat) worn with striped trousers and a waistcoat (vest) is traditional daytime "wedding attire". Seldom is a tuxedo worn for daytime functions unless for a formal wedding being held in a large church or cathedral.
